  • The Rugby World Cup is the world's third largest sporting event after the Olympics and the Football World Cup.

  • Jonah Lomu has been the top try scorer at two RWCs - he scored 7 tries in 1995 and eight tries in 1999.
  • Australia are the only side to appear in three finals. England, New Zealand and France have all appeared twice.
  • When Japan lost 145 - 17 to the All Blacks in 1995 they gained the dubious record of most points conceded in a RWC. Former Prime Minister Yoshiro Miro is the president of the Japanese rugby union.
  • Ireland have reached the RWC quarter finals four times.
  • On the William Webb Ellis Trophy, one handle is decorated with a satyr, the other is decorated with a nymph.
  • When Wales shocked the rugby world in the 1991 RWC by losing to 16-13 to Western Samoa the quip was made Thank heavens they weren't playing the whole of Samoa!
  • New Zealand's Sean Fitzpatrick has made more RWC appearances than any other player - 17 in three tournaments.
  • France are the highest ranked side never to have won the RWC.
